Prayer for Afghanistan

As we watch events unfold in Afghanistan and we wonder about the country's future, like me, you may want to pray for the Afghan people and for the military personnel who have paid such a heavy price for their freedom.  It is based on a prayer written by the Revd Dr Marjory MacLean for the Church of Scotland.

A Prayer for Afghanistan

All-loving God, your hands have fashioned every lovely corner of this treasured planet,
and the beautiful land of Afghanistan is as precious
as every other place your children call home.
It is where the lives and loves of the Afghan people,
in safer times, blossom and flourish.

We grieve today with those who are grieving over Afghanistan,
the people who call it home,
but can live there no more;
the people who no longer feel free to go about their daily lives,
and fear what will happen to them;
and the people who have served there over the years,
and sacrificed their health for the sake of the country's future.

We remember those who have lost their lives in Afghanistan,
soldiers and civilians, and their families and comrades at home,
who with renewed sadness are wondering about their sacrifices,
and asking, 'Was it worth it?'.

We pray for peace, dignity and freedom
for the men, women and children of Afghanistan;
for courage, vision and generosity
across the international community as
nations respond to their needs;
and for tranquillity of mind for Service personnel,
veterans and their families.

In the name of Jesus Christ,
the Prince of Peace,
we pray.  Amen.
